There is just something about summer family photography in Utah that makes my heart so happy.

Maybe it’s the warm evening light, the green trees, the mountain views, or the fact that summer seems to slow everything down just a little. Whatever it is, summer is hands-down my favorite time of year to photograph families. And this beautiful family session in American Fork Canyon was such a perfect example of why I love it so much.

I had the absolute pleasure of photographing the Papenfuss family while they were visiting family here in Utah from Texas. Since they were already spending time with family, they decided to make some memories of their trip with a family photography session in American Fork Canyon — and I am so glad they did!

A Summer Family Session in American Fork Canyon

American Fork Canyon is one of my favorite places for family photography in Utah. The scenery is absolutely beautiful, but what I love most is the variety it gives us during a session. We can move around, explore a little, and create a gallery that feels like so much more than just one backdrop.

The Papenfuss family booked a 30-minute mini session, and somehow we were able to get SO much variety in that short amount of time.

That is one of my favorite things about mini sessions. When families come ready to have fun and interact with each other, we can capture a beautiful mixture of traditional family portraits, candid moments, and all of those little in-between interactions that make their family unique.

And these kids? Absolutely darling.

The Sweetest Sibling Connection

One of my favorite parts of this session was watching the relationship between their children.

They were so sweet to each other, and I loved seeing all of the little playful and tender interactions between them. We captured giggles, cuddles, playful moments, and those genuine expressions that happen when children are simply being themselves.

Those are the photographs I love most.

Of course, I want every family to have a beautiful picture where everyone is looking at the camera. But years from now, I think the images that will mean the most are often the ones that capture how your children loved each other at that exact age.

The way they held hands.

The way they laughed together.

The little hugs.

The playful moments that you might otherwise forget.

Those are the moments I want to preserve.

Utah Family Photography That Feels Like You

One of my biggest goals as an Utah family photographer is to create images that feel natural and authentic to each family. I don't want your session to feel stiff or overly posed. I want you to interact, laugh, play, snuggle your babies, and enjoy your people. I'll guide you when needed, but I also leave plenty of room for the genuine moments to happen naturally.

The Papenfuss family was such a joy to photograph because they were completely willing to play along, interact, and just enjoy their time together. That allowed us to capture such a beautiful mix of posed portraits and candid family moments.

And honestly? That is my favorite kind of session.

Why I Love Summer Family Photos

I could photograph summer sessions all year long if I had the choice. There is something so special about summer family photos in Utah. The mountains are green, the evenings are beautiful, and there are so many gorgeous locations to choose from throughout Utah County and beyond.

Whether you're looking for American Fork Canyon family photos, mountain family photography, a quick mini session, or a full family photography experience, summer is such a beautiful time to document your family.

And while I absolutely love a beautiful portrait, what I love even more is creating a gallery that tells the story of your family right now. Because this stage of life doesn't last forever. Your kids will grow. Their little personalities will change. Their relationships will evolve. And one day, the way they fit into your arms, the way they laugh together, and the way they look at each other will all be different.

That's why I love what I do. I get to freeze these little pieces of your life for you. And I get to do it in some of the most beautiful places Utah has to offer.
